Previous week’s Thursday we learnt a lot about what would be the themes for our project. We had a nice discussion about what could be our themes and one topic was what kind of challenges we face when we learn Finnish language. All the group members opened up about their own experiences of Finnish language. We made small performances of our experiences and it went well. I liked it when everyone had quite similar experiences, like when you start the course everything seems interesting and then you realize time is going and you didn’t learn much. Many also talked about how the grammatical part of Finnish is difficult as Finnish language is so different from other languages, like English and many others.

Also we talked about Finnish culture. As people don’t talk so much, the possibilities for non-Finnish speakers to practice Finnish language are limited, and that makes it hard to learn. But on other hand, we also came to the agreement that it is always good to speak Finnish more and more, even with the mistakes try to speak more and more, because that is the way to learn it.

Other topics that we spoke about were stereotypes and how the Media represents foreigners in the news. The concept arose from the sex crime reports which have recently been a repeated topic in TV and other news platforms. We were about 4 of us and all coming from different countries, so we asked ourselves a question. When the news about a foreigner committing a crime doesn’t specify where the person is from, it means it refers to all non-Finnish people having done that said crime. So we realized how much the generalization of the word ’foreigner’ affect’s the good non-Finnish people by making them victims of others, and that affects our well-being. I have personally never committed a crime, and my family background is against crimes BUT why do I have to be the victim of others’ actions? And for how long I will be the victim? Today the racism is increasing, hatred is increasing, because of generalization and stereotypes.

Let’s say I would be Finnish myself and I always hear in the news that a ’foreigner’ has done this crime, a ’foreigner’ has done that, because the word ’foreigner’ includes all people with non-Finnish background, of course I would have the image that all foreigners are like that, and in this case it is not true. All these foreigners have their own countries and backgrounds so to generalize is a very BIG mistake and affects the wellbeing of others for nothing. To conclude, we ended the class and plan to develop this theme into something that we could show to our audience.
